Testing requirements for promotion to 1st Dan Black Belt:

Prior to preparing for the 1st Dan Black Belt testing, intensive preparation is required to complete the step of learning the material taught at 1st Geup High Red Belt.  This includes being prepared to complete the following: 

A demonstration of basic physical proficiency and understanding of the pattern Chung-Mu, as well as a demonstration that the knowledge and physical proficiency of all patterns, and pattern exercises learned at previous belt ranks has been maintained.
 

A demonstration of basic physical proficiency and understanding of Continuous Semi-Free Sparring, and Prearranged Step-Sparring, as well as a demonstration that the knowledge and physical proficiency of No-Contact Free Sparring and all step-sparring formats learned at previous belt ranks has been maintained.


A demonstration of basic physical proficiency and understanding of the following kicks with both the left and right leg;

     Flying Side Pushing KickFlying Side Thrusting Kick

     Flying 360Reverse Hook Kick (offensive)Flying Twin Foot High Kick - 2 targets

     Flying Twin Foot Turning Kick - 1 target 

     Flying Twin Foot Side Turning Kick - 1 target

     Mid-Air 180Reverse Crescent Kick

     Four Consecutive Kicks (different kicks - different targets and/or directions)

as well as a demonstration that the knowledge and physical proficiency of all kicks learned at previous belt ranks has been maintained.
 


A demonstration of basic physical proficiency and understanding of the following techniques;
 

     Walking Stance high Front Strike with the Knifehand (obverse - inward)

     Walking Stance high Front Strike with the Reverse Knifehand (reverse - inward)

     Walking Stance Upward Block with a Twin Palm

     Sitting Stance middle Front Block with the Outer Forearm (inward)

     Sitting Stance high Side Strike with the Backfist (outward)

     L-Stance middle Checking Block with the X-Knifehand


A
fter completion of these preparation steps at 1st geup level, preparation for 1st Dan Black Belt testing will begin.  This includes the expectations for the Chang Hon Kwan Taekwon-Do class as follows:Active workouts in approximately 7-8 classes/month for at least 9 months at a 1st Geup High Red Belt
level;

     Active workouts in approximately 17 classes in the two months just prior to the next testing; and

 
    Students work out on their own outside of class on an average of five hours/week during this time.


Passing the 1st Dan Written Test at least two weeks prior to testing.  This test will cover the required knowledge learned at all previous belt ranks as well as the following 1st Dan knowledge requirements;

    The pattern history, pattern diagram, and number of movements for pattern
Chung-Mu

    The meaning of the color of Black Belt
 

   
The eight parts of the Training Secrets of Taekwon-Do 

    Counting from one to ten in Sino-Korean

    The history of the art of Taekwon-Do
 


A demonstration of basic physical proficiency and understanding of the Ho-Sin-Sul (Self Defense) technique of a;
Shoulder roll to the right and left sides over a waist-high barrier - coming up in both a kneeling position and with a break fall
as well as a demonstration that the knowledge and physical proficiency of all Ho-Sin-Sul techniques learned at previous belt ranks has been  maintained.

The demonstration of a Ho-Sin-Sul routine (with the assistance of several Black Belts in refining its presentation).  This routine will consist of ten specified defensive techniques, with a focus on throwing, joint-locking, pressure points, and take-downs, not on punching and kicking.  It will be restricted to two minutes in length.  Specified attacks in any order are:

A 250 word report is required on the relationship between (meaning how does one contribute, or benefit the other) the 9 points to be observed while performing patterns, found on this web page. 

 

A demonstration of basic physical proficiency and understanding of both power and technique breaks on 1" pine boards and concrete tiles.  These will include several specific hand and foot technique breaking requirements for 1st Dan Black Belt, as well as some from previous rank level breaking requirements.  Breaks will be selected by the testing candidate and/or specified by the test board. 


A sign-off is required by two knowledgeable Black Belts on the following:  

    
A sign-off for each of the nine patterns you have learned in Taekwon-Do,
     starting with Cheon-Ji and ending with Chung-Mu; (Sign-offs must be obtained
     in order and can have no more than two being worked at any one time.)


A sign-off for each of the step-sparring formats learned during your Taekwon-Do career; and 

A sign-off for each of the kicks (both right and left leg) learned during your Taekwon-Do career



Tournament competition in both Patterns and Sparring in at least one tournament during this testing cycle is required.
 Participate in 20 hours of community service type activities during this testing cycle.  The community service activities can include those hours donated over the last year.  Rank Promotion Testing

The actual requirements AT testing for 1st Dan Black Belt will consist of a physical test and an oral examination.  The physical test will consist of a demonstration of the pattern Chung-Mu, as well as random elements of Taekwon-Do selected by the test board.  These random elements will be selected to include requirements learned at this level (listed above), as well as some elements from previous belt rank testings.  The oral examination will consist of random questions covering required knowledge learned at this and all previous belt ranks.
