Testing requirements for promotion to 4th Dan Black Belt:

 

A demonstration of basic physical proficiency and understanding of the patterns Sam-il, Yu-Sin, and Choi-Yeong, as well as a demonstration that the knowledge and physical proficiency of all patterns, and pattern exercises, learned at previous belt ranks has been maintained.

 

A demonstration of basic physical proficiency and understanding of no-contact Free Sparring with three opponents (Novice Black Belts), as well as a demonstration that the knowledge and physical proficiency of all step-sparring formats learned at previous belt ranks has been maintained.

 

A demonstration of basic physical proficiency and understanding of the following kicks with both the left and right leg;

Flying 360Reverse Turning Kick

Flying Triple Kicks

Flying Consecutive Kicks (3)

Flying Combination Kicks (3)

Midair 360Double Back Piercing Kick

as well as a demonstration that the knowledge and physical proficiency of all kicks learned at previous belt ranks has been maintained.

 

A demonstration of basic physical proficiency and understanding of the following techniques;

Warrior Ready Stance type B (Mu-sa Jun-bi Seo-gi  B)

Inner Open Stance (An Pal-ja Seo-gi)

Inner Open Ready Stance (An Pal-ja Jun-bi Seo-gi)

Outer Open Stance (Ba-kkat Pal-ja Seo-gi)

Outer Open Ready Stance (Ba-kkat Pal-ja Jun-bi Seo-gi)

Sitting Stance Horizontal Side Strike with the Backhand

Sitting Stance middle Wedging Block with the Reverse Knifehands

Sitting Stance Horizontal Release with a Double Elbow

Sitting Stance high Angle Punch with the Forefist 

Walking Stance Rising Block with an X-knifehand

Walking Stance W-Shape Block with the Knifehands (outward)

L-Stance high Block with the Outer Forearm (obverse - outward)

L-Stance high Reverse Knifehand Guarding Block

L-Stance low Punch with a Double Forefist

Rear-Foot Stance high Side Punch with a Middle Knuckle Fist (reverse)

Fixed Stance U-Shape Punch with the Forefists

Fixed Stance Checking Block with an X-Knifehand

L-Stance - high Block with the Outer Forearm (obverse - outward), and low Block with the Outer Forearm (reverse - outward)Punch

Moving forward in a Triple Stepping Motion

 

A demonstration of basic physical proficiency and understanding of both power and technique breaks on 1" pine boards and concrete tiles.  These will include several specific hand and foot technique breaking requirements for 4th Dan Black Belt, as well as some from previous rank level breaking requirements.  Breaks will be selected by the testing candidate and/or specified by the test board.

 

A demonstration of basic physical proficiency and understanding of the Ho-Sin-Sul (Self Defense) techniques learned at previous belt ranks on both your left and right side.

 

Passing the 4th Dan Written Test.  This test will cover the required knowledge learned at all previous belt ranks as well as the following 4th Dan knowledge requirements;

The pattern history, pattern diagram, and number of movements for the pattern Sam-il

The pattern history, pattern diagram, and number of movements for the pattern Yu-Sin

The pattern history, pattern diagram, and number of movements for the pattern Choi-Yeong

The eight characteristics of the ideal instructor;

At least eight of the vital spots of high section  

At least eight of the vital spots of middle section  

At least eight of the vital spots of low section  

The 12 parts of the instructor’s responsibility to the Student-Instructor relationship;  

The characteristics of a Warrior Ready Stance type B  (Mu-sa Jun-bi Seo-gi  B);  

The characteristics of an Inner Open Stance (An Pal-ja Seo-gi);  

The characteristics of an Inner Open Ready Stance (An Pal-ja Jun-bi Seo-gi);  

The characteristics of an Outer Open Stance (Ba-kkat Pal-ja Seo-gi);

The characteristics of an Outer Open Ready Stance (Ba-kkat Pal-ja Jun-bi Seo-gi)  

 

Training expectations for the Chang Hon Kwan Taekwon-Do class are as follows:

Active workouts in approximately 7-8 classes/month for at least 36 months at 3rd Dan Black Belt level;

Active workouts in approximately 80 classes in the twelve months just prior to the next testing; and

Students are expected to workout on their own outside of class.

 

At least one year of teaching experience as the head instructor of a Taekwon-Do class during this testing cycle is required.

  

Tournament competition in at least two tournaments as a Black Belt during this testing cycle is required.

  

Participate in 40 hours of community service type activities during this testing cycle.

 

A thesis on any aspect of Taekwon-Do, a minimum of six pages in length.

 

Rank Promotion Testing

The actual requirements AT testing for 4th Dan Black Belt will consist of a physical test and an oral examination.  The physical test will consist of a demonstration of the patterns Sam-il, Yu-Sin, and Choi-Yeong, as well as random elements of Taekwon-Do selected by the test board.  These random elements will be selected to include requirements learned at this level (listed above), as well as some elements from previous belt rank testings.  The oral examination will consist of random questions covering required knowledge learned at this and all previous belt ranks.
