There
are several methods for tying the belt (tti) around the Taekwon-Do uniform (do-bok). The following are the three methods
used by different students, in order of preference for Chang Hon Kwan Taekwon-Do.
Method
1 – Single Wrap Belt (Paraphrased
from the Encyclopedia of Taekwon-Do by
General Choi Hong Hi 1995 edition) 1. Find the center of the belt by matching the two ends
until they are even. 2. Place the center of the belt
on your spine at the small of your
back.
3.
Wrap both ends around your waist to the front of your
body, at your navel. 4. Cross the right end of the
belt over the top of the left end. 5. Take the end that is outside and tuck it under the end that
is closest to your body at your navel (from bottom to top). 6. Extend both ends in front
of you to make sure they are even. If
they are not even, adjust the belt so that the ends are even,
and the crossing is at your navel. 7. Tie the belt in a square knot and tighten by pulling
on both ends.
Tying
a Square Knot
A.
With your left hand, take hold of the end of the belt
that is coming upward to the left.
B.
With your right hand, take hold of the end of the
belt that is coming downward to the right.
C.
Cross the end of the belt that is in your left hand
over the end of the belt that is in your
right hand, creating a circle or loop.
D.
With your left hand, hold on to the spot where the
belt ends are crossed.
E.
Take your right hand and put it down through the
loop created in move C above, and grab
the belt end that is on top of the crossed
belt ends in your left hand.
F.
Pull the belt that is now in your right hand up through
the loop, while continuing to hold
onto the cross in your left hand.
G.
Pull both ends of the belt to tighten the knot.
8. The correctly tied belt will have
the following characteristics:
The ends of the belt should be even in length.
The opening of the square knot should be pointed
to the students left. The
wrapping of the belt around the waist should not
be twisted If any of these characteristics
are not correct, continue to adjust
the knot and the belt until they are.
Method 2 – Double
Wrap Belt
1. With your right hand, place one end of the belt on your spine at
the small of your back. 2. While continuing to hold on to the end with the right hand, use
your left hand to wrap the belt around your waist two times
going counter clockwise. (make sure the belt does not
twist while wrapping). 3. At your navel, take the long end of the belt and tuck it under (from
bottom to top) all layers of wrapped belt that are around
you waist.
4.
At this point, you can pull the end of the belt that is at the small
of your back downward and out from under the layers
of wrapped belt. Pull this end of the belt out until is free
to a point in the center of your body at your navel. 5. You should now have a crossed area at your navel. 6. Extend both ends in front
of you to make sure they are even. If
they are not even, adjust the belt so that the ends are even,
and the crossing is at your navel. 7. Tie the belt in a square knot and tighten by pulling on
both ends.

With your left hand, take hold of the end of the belt
that is coming upward to the left.
B.
With your right hand, take hold of the end of the
belt that is coming downward to the right.
C.

over the end of the belt that is in your
right hand, creating a circle or loop.
D.
With your left hand, hold on to the spot where the
belt ends are crossed.
E.
Take your right hand and put it down through the
loop created in move C above, and grab
the belt end that is on top of the crossed
belt ends in your left hand.
F.
Pull the belt that is now in your right hand up through
the loop, while continuing to hold onto

G.
Pull both ends of the belt to tighten the knot.
8. The correctly
tied belt will have the following characteristics:
The ends of the belt should be
even in length.
The opening of the square knot
should be pointed to
the students left.
The layers of the
wrapped belt around the waist should be
overlapped and not twisted
If any of these characteristics are not correct, continue to adjust
the knot and the belt until they are.
Method 3 – Double Wrap Belt (Paraphrased
from the Encyclopedia of Taekwon-Do by
General Choi Hong Hi 1965 edition) 1. Find the center of the belt by matching the two ends until they
are even. Place center of the belt at your navel in
the center of your body. 3. Wrap both ends around your waist to the back and cross the left
hand above the right hand before changing hands. 4. Change hands and continue wrapping each belt end around your
waist until they are back in front of your body. 5. Starting from the navel and going clockwise, run your hands completely
around the belt wrapping to ensure that the belt
closest to your body remains underneath to prevent a twisting
of the belt in the back. 6. Place the end of the belt in your right hand over top of the entire
belt wrap at your navel. 7. You should now have a crossed area at your navel. 8. Take the end of the belt that
is on the outside, and tuck it under
both layers of the wrapped belt (from
bottom to top).
9.
Extend both ends in front of you to make sure they are even. If
they are not even, adjust the belt so that the ends are even,
and the crossing is at your navel. 10. Tie the belt in a square knot and tighten by pulling on
both ends.

that is coming upward to the left.
B.

belt that is coming downward to the right.
C.

over the end of the belt that is in your
right hand, creating a circle or loop.

With your left hand, hold on to the spot where the
belt ends are crossed.

the belt end that is on top of the crossed
belt ends in your left hand.
F.
Pull the belt that is now in your right hand up through
the loop, while continuing to hold onto
the cross in your left hand.
G.
Pull both ends of the belt to tighten the knot.
11. The correctly tied belt will
have the following characteristics: The ends of the belt
should be even in length. The opening of the
square knot should be pointed
to the students left. The
layers of the wrapped belt around the waist should
be overlapped and not twisted If any of these
