How do I begin classes?

Contact Master Heather Breiting to ask any questions about the class, and arrange a meeting in the lobby of the recreation center to go over the new student information paperwork. This can be obtained from the instructor or printed out from the .pdf files above. Please ask about getting a Foothills Recreation Center ID card when you come to the class.

How much are the dues?

Dues for residents of the Foothills Recreation District are $90.00/month. Out of district resident dues are $80.00/month. You will need to obtain a Foothills Recreation District ID card, as we need your ID card number for your monthly participation in class.

Are there extra costs as well as class dues?

Extra costs will include purchasing equipment, testings, and tournaments. Testings will occur once every 3-4 months, and start at $40.00 per testing. The cost rises nominally as you go up in rank to cover breaking materials for your test, belts, etc. Tournaments occur several times a year, and cost between $20.00, and $60.00, depending on what activities you participate in.

What kind of equipment do I need and when do I need it?

After you decide you are interested in continuing Taekwon-Do classes, the first thing you will need is a uniform. Later, you will need protective gear for sparring. In order to spar in tournaments, every tournament requires a mouth guard, a cup, head gear, as well as acceptable hand and foot pads. The instructors of CHK TKD also recommend head gear to protect the head in case of a fall.

How do I get uniforms and equipment?

You can get an idea of the type of equipment you will need from the instructors after you decide you are interested in continuing Taekwon-Do classes. Until that time, you will only need to come dressed in the appropriate attire mentioned below.

What do I wear on my first day of instruction?

For your first few classes, you would want loose fitting clothing like sweat pants and a t-shirt. You do not need a uniform until you are sure that this is something you would like to do for a while.

What do I learn on my first day of instruction?

The first day of class, you will have an introduction to Taekwon-Do that includes a definition, a short history, and what it is used for. An assistant instructor will inform you of the class rules, and how students and instructors behave within the class structure. After this brief orientation, you will begin to learn the physical aspects of Taekwon-Do.

Do I need to know anything before I begin classes?

Many students are concerned about their first day of class, and want to be as prepared as possible. All that is really necessary is to bring an open mind, a courteous attitude, and a willingness to learn. We will help you with anything else you need to know.

How do I tie the belt on a Taekwon-Do uniform?

The ceremony at the
beginning and end of class
is so unusual, what is going on?
